The Manitoba First Nations Diabetes Leadership Council was formed in 1999 consisting of representatives from each tribal council and non-affiliated First Nations. For a complete list of members, click on the Membership link.
The Manitoba First Nation Diabetes Leadership Council will address the epidemic of diabetes in Manitoba First Nations as a public health issue based on the Manitoba First Nations Diabetes Strategy, “A Call to Action”.
The Manitoba First Nations Diabetes Leadership Council will facilitate linkages, communication and information sharing between First Nation organizations and relevant groups regarding diabetes in Manitoba First Nations.
Our Objectives
- To implement and ensure sustainability of the Manitoba First Nations Diabetes Strategy, “A Call to Action”.
- To advocate for ongoing adequate sustainable ADI funding for all First Nation communities.
- To ensure and advise ongoing training for First Nation Diabetes workers and health workers.
- To assist and support First Nations with community based diabetes initiatives.
- To ensure that the council members communicate concerns and issues from their respective community membership and communicate back to their respective communities.
- To ensure access and availability of culturally relevant diabetes resources for each First Nation community.
- To provide relevant diabetes technical support and recommendations to First Nation leadership.
- To advocate, review and share research regarding diabetes
